I really like the obscured portraits but what really got me thinking was the Goldfrapp cover with the car headlights in the background and the smoke. I knew I was going to shoot a guy, but I wasn't sure what the angle was going to be.
I ended up shooting twice for a few reasons. This first shoot ended up being pretty complicated logistically. I bought a smoke machine but since I was shooting in a parking lot I had to have a Li-Ion battery pack to run it which didn't last very long. I also had a set of Profoto strobes running off another battery pack. On the shoot day my initial model bailed so my boyfriend stepped in as he is used to doing. We had to time everything right so that the smoke machine was warmed up and ready, then turn the car on to have the bright headlights, then turn the strobes on, then get the camera in the right position (the tripod didn't have the right size quick release plate so I just balanced the camera on top of it), then start the fog machine and shoot like hell until the fog ran out while yelling directions. After the fog dissipated we turned everything off and waited until it warmed up again. We got three or four good runs out of it.
Here's the setup:
Some of the results from this first shoot were pretty cool.
I decided to shoot again another night. I happened to have a medium format camera for the weekend so I used it along with some profoto strobes. After the first shoot I started thinking more about having the car headlights pointing right at the camera and letting it get all flarey in the middle of the image. I suspected I would also have to light the model since he would be right in front of the car and the headlights wouldn't do much to light him. I lit him from either side and got some great results - see below with my handsome friend, Tyler.
That's all for now! I might be posting something involving chocolate a bit later. Cheers!
